There’s nothing wrong with naming a child after a Disney character … my only issue with this particular name is that it has the word "dumb" in it But there’s so many more possibilities!

Tradition of Eldest Irish Son to Join the Church?

I’ve heard that in Ireland (and possibly other Catholic countries) it’s a tradition for the eldest son to join the church. Where did this tradition start and are there any sources to read up on it?

The first born son traditionally became a priest. Also, it is the first born son to be the lead pallbearer for his father’s funeral. Not sure of a source on this, except I’m Irish-Catholic from outside of Boston.

I’m a single mom and my first son is due on June first. I’m wondering whether or not to circumcise?

It doesn’t matter to me for cultural or religious reasons. All the research I’ve read seems like conflicting propaganda. I’m just wondering if there is really any definitive medical benefits for or against. As his father has chosen not to be involved, I don’t even have him with whom to discuss it. I don’t like the idea of taking the choice away from my son if there are no real advantages to doing it. Any advice?

Well, I support NOT circumcising, it’s an important part of a male body and male sexual function. People might argue that cleanliness is a factor, but a quick swipe with a wetnap and some additional care in the bathroom is all that’s needed until he’s old enough to wash himself. Put it this way: Circumcision is a parental elective, if you choose that option there is no going back. Alternatively, adult circumcision is an personal elective, if he wants to be circumcised he can have a procedure as a consenting adult. Best to leave well enough alone and if he changes his mind, that’s up to him.

As a knife salesman I was hoping he’d scalp my boy, in which case I could accept him as kind of underling, akin to a woman in terms of hierarchy. Who receives the flag at a military funeral : step-mother, or eldest son?

My father-in-law is retired Navy and, in case of death, we were wondering who would receive his burial flag. My husband says he would receive it since he is the eldest son. I say his step-mother if they are still married at the time of his death. Please tell me who is right. Thank you.
